内容简介:State capacity is a crucial driver of public service delivery and economic development. A growing body of literature examines the factors influencing selection into the bureaucracy, emphasizing the importance of pro-social motivation and the tension between intrinsic and extrinsic incentives. However, much of this evidence focuses on observable traits, which are often confounded with unobserved characteristics. This paper investigates the staggered implementation of a new high school curriculum in China, designed to influence students' preferences and knowledge. Using the recently developed extended two-way fixed effects framework, we identify several key findings: (1) post-reform students exhibit stronger ideological alignment with the state; (2) there is no significant effect on educational decisions; (3) interest in government employment has increased, leading to shifts in the composition of the workforce between the public and private sectors; and (4) the quality and characteristics of public servants have improved.
