Instructor’s Bio:

Professor Carlo Birkholz is an Assistant Professor at the Chair of Development Economics and Global Political Economy at the University of Göttingen, Germany. He also serves as a Junior Research Associate at ZEW Mannheim, a Joachim-Herz Add-on Fellow, a member of the Campus Institute Data Science (CIDAS), and an external affiliate of the Norwegian Centre for Taxation (NoCeT). He received his Ph.D. from the University of Mannheim, and his dissertation was awarded third prize in the KfW Award for Practice-Oriented Development Research.

His general research interests lie in the fields of Development Economics, Political Economy, and Public Finance. In particular, he enjoys combining innovative data sources—such as satellite imagery, household electricity consumption from smart meters, and web-scraped data—with machine learning techniques including random forests and large language models, in order to address economic questions that are otherwise difficult to study.
